Grilled Onions
Grilled and caramelized, perfect for BBQ burgers & hot dogs!
Ingredients:
- 3 onions, peeled
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- kosher salt
- fresh ground black pepper
Directions:
- Hold the onion on a cutting board, with the root end facing sideways. About 3/4 of an inch in from the root, push a wooden skewer through the onion.* Push the skewer all the way through, so that the flat end of the skewer is next to the onion and the pointy end is as far away from the onion as possible.
- Slice the root off of the onion. Then cut a 3/4 inch slice of onion, ensuring that the skewer is in the centre of the slice.
- Use a knife to cut off the excess skewer. You have your first onion skewer! Put the onion skewer aside.
- Grab the remaining onion, push the wooden skewer through, and slice again creating another onion skewer.
- Repeat until all onions have been sliced into even slices, about 3/4 inch thick.
- Brush the onion skewers on both sides with olive oil, season with salt and pepper.
- Heat the grill on medium for 5-10 minutes.
- Lower the burners to low and cook the onions on the low burner, flipping every 10 minutes until golden brown, about 25-40 minutes. Onions are done when golden and tender.
- Remove the skewers and enjoy!
*Note: Using wooden skewers will help keep the onion intact and prevent them from falling through the grates.
